My Official Story

Hello, my name is Pamela Hannam. I am a stand behind the chair working Cosmetologist. Over the last 24 years I have owned 7 salons, held licenses in four states, and I have worked as an Independent Contractor in numerous booth rental situations.

For years I struggled to understand why I wasn’t able to come close to the $90,000 a year income I was told I could earn when I went to school.
With each failure, setback and disappointment I became more and more discouraged and cynical about the earning potential of my career choice. I knew I loved doing my job, but I began to believe there was no way to really ever make any money at it.

A couple of years ago, as I sat in the middle of the floor of my apartment crying my heart out over yet another failed attempt, I did something that changed my life and my career forever. I took a stack of 3 x 5 index cards and I began to write down all the mistakes, mishaps, failures and heart aches I had endured over the years doing hair.

As I sat there staring at all those cards, my tears burning my eyes, a passion began to burn in my heart. I saw for the first time, the problem wasn’t my career choice. Every mistake I had ever made was related to marketing and business skills. I had never been exposed to any of these topics in cosmetology school so I didn’t have any of the fundamental business skills I needed to succeed as a stylist or as a salon owner.
I realized what I really needed were answers on how to become a successful Cosmetologist through proper marketing.

As I began to do research for the answers to my questions, what I found was there is very little, if any, information available that addressed these issues in our Profession. There were no solid step by step instructions on how to market yourself, how to be a great business person and to really make money as a single entity. What few courses I did find were written mostly by high profile Professional Salon owners or Stylist who worked as “Platform Artist”. They certainly were not like me, a small salon owner or a single operator. Their information was surface “fluff” at best, and a complete rip off, at their worse.

I got so angry! The good thing about me is when I get mad, I get motivated, and boy, did I ever!
The one sentence; “The name changes, but the game remains the same” kept running over and over in my mind.
From my years as a Bodybuilder I really excel at gathering information so began reading every marketing book I could get my hands on. I went to lectures and listened to CD’s in my car. I didn’t care what business they were discussing, I just wanted all the marketing knowledge I could get my hands on.
I took out those 3 x 5 cards and I began to apply all that I was learning to each one of the problems that I had encountered as a Stylist and as a Salon Owner. Slowly, as I got the answers and the solutions that I had needed all those years, I began to make the money I had been told was possible to make doing this profession.

This is how this book and my lecture series, 10 Essential Marketing skills For Success came to be.
